Clermont’s Cooper Memorial Library is blessed to have two volunteer groups that donate their time and talent to the beautiful new facility. In between my reporting for Bloomberg News, research for the book and other commitments, I’m making time to get to know my fellow book lovers. I attended Monday’s Friends of the Cooper Memorial Library meeting, presided over by its president, Jody Close, who had won the Chamber of Commerce’s Gem of the Hills Award for her service to the community. The Friends have several projects in the work, including a calendar with historical photos and coupons. After the meeting, I had an opportunity to chat with Ann Dupee a legend in Central Florida and in journalism circles.

Last week, I had the fun of sharing photos and history from Images of America: GROVELAND with members of the South Lake Historical Society thanks to the invitation of my friend, Dolores Gano Walker whose grandfather Archibald Gano was important to the foundations of Clermont and Groveland. At the historical society meeting, I met Bonnie Ray, president of the Cooper Memorial Library Association.
What a joy to know by the time Images of America: CLERMONT is published, I will have made wonderful new friendships.
When I was a Girl Scout, one of my favorite songs was “Make New Friends.” The words, as best I remember them, are: Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.
My next post will be after Friday’s Book Brigade and Grand Opening, which starts at 9 a.m. It should prove to be an exciting and historic event.
